Pure Aluminum Foil vs. VMPET: Which Barrier Do You Need?

Compare heavy-duty aluminum foils with cost-saving metallized films to find the right fit for your product's shelf life and budget.

Maximum Barrier
AL (Aluminum Foil) | Heavy-Duty Protection

Pure Aluminum Foil: Blocks Everything

The industry standard for long-term freshness. We use a solid sheet of pure aluminum to build a physical wall that blocks light, oxygen, and moisture entirely. Use this when you pack specialty coffee, organic superfoods, or dry powders that cannot risk any aroma loss or clumping.

Cost-Effective
VMPET (Metallized PET) | Cost-Effective Alternative

VMPET Film: Strong Barrier, Lower Cost

We coat high-quality polyester film with a thin layer of aluminum. It gives you strong barrier performance and resists cracking during transit, while keeping your packaging weight and costs down. The silver interior looks great and works perfectly for fast-moving retail products like snacks and candy, where you want strong protection on a budget.

Lamination Engineering

Multi-Layer Structures: Built for Performance

A single layer is rarely enough. We laminate these metal barriers between strong outer films and safe inner sealants to create packaging that won't break or leak.

Maximum Security Shielding System
Long-Term Preservation

Heavy-Duty Protection with Pure Aluminum Foil

Built to keep your products fresh for months, even in harsh transit. We place pure AL Foil between a strong printable layer (PET/MATOPP) and a food-safe LLDPE inner sealant. This stops oxidation and moisture completely. We highly recommend this for exported dry goods, chemical powders, and high-end roasted coffee.

Recommended Applications

Export-grade bulk dry goods (e.g., Box Bottom Pouch)
Dense fine chemical powders
Heritage roasted beans
High-value organic superfoods

Lab Results: WVTR, OTR & Barrier Performance

We test our materials to strict ASTM standards. Here is how our foils and films perform when it comes to blocking air, moisture, and light.

Performance MetricPure AL Foil (Heavy-Duty)VMPET (Cost-Effective)Why It Matters to Your Business
WVTR (Water Vapor Transmission Rate)0.00 g/㎡/24h (Complete block)0.5 - 1.2 g/㎡/24hStops powders from clumping and keeps snacks crispy.
OTR (Oxygen Transmission Rate)0.00 cc/㎡/24h·atm (Complete block)1.0 - 2.5 cc/㎡/24h·atmPrevents fats from going rancid and keeps colors bright.
Light Transmission0% (Blocks all light)< 1.5% (Strong light block)Keeps UV rays from breaking down vitamins and sensitive ingredients.
Crack Resistance in TransitGood (Needs strong outer layers)Excellent (Bends without breaking)Shows how well the bag holds up to rough handling during shipping.
Cost OverviewHigher cost (Best for long shelf life)Lower cost (Great for retail volume)Helps you balance your packaging spend against the protection you actually need.
ASTM Lab Standards: WVTR tested under ASTM F1249 | OTR tested under ASTM D3985 | Light Transmission tested under ASTM D1003. All comparative data validated at 23°C and 35% RH conditions. Thickness configurations range from 7.0μm to 12.0μm depending on final dry lamination specifications.
Sourcing FAQ

Packaging FAQ: Barrier Materials and Specifications

Get clear answers on foil capabilities, material differences, and how our bags perform in your supply chain.

Aluminum Foil (AL) blocks almost all oxygen and moisture (OTR under 0.01 cc/m²/day). Use it if your product needs a shelf life over 12 months. VMPET (Vacuum Metallized PET) gives you a strong barrier at a lower price point (OTR 0.1-1.0 cc/m²/day). It works perfectly for 6-12 month shelf lives and helps keep your packaging costs down.
We look at your product's respiration rate, your shelf life goals, and how you ship it. Our engineers calculate the exact oxygen and moisture barrier (OTR and WVTR) you need. Then, we match it to the right structure—from heavy-duty PET/AL/PE for maximum protection, to BOPP/VMPET/LLDPE to save money on mid-level barrier needs.
Yes. We use PLA and NatureFlex structures that are certified for home composting, while keeping moisture transmission (WVTR) under 5 g/m²/day. They perform much better than standard compostable films, keeping dry foods, coffee, and tea fresh for up to 9 months.
All our materials comply with FDA 21 CFR for food contact and EU Regulation 10/2011 for European markets. They are also BPA-free. We provide SGS test reports for any material you need upon request.
Aluminum Foil (AL) is a solid sheet of metal. At the right thickness, it blocks all gases and light. You need AL foil if you sell products that lose their scent quickly (like fresh roasted coffee), have ingredients sensitive to moisture, or if you expect your goods to sit on a shelf for 18 to 24 months. VMPET is a plastic film coated in aluminum. It works great for most retail items, but over a long time, trace amounts of air can pass through.
Since pure aluminum foil is solid metal, rough handling and shaking during ocean freight can cause microscopic cracks. This ruins the barrier. We prevent this by laminating the foil between a tough outer plastic layer and a soft, shock-absorbing inner sealant (LLDPE). This structure absorbs the impacts during shipping, keeping the foil core intact and your product safe.
Yes. Thick foil laminates can sometimes wrinkle or seal poorly on fast Form-Fill-Seal (FFS) lines if the material isn't right. We add slip agents to our films so they run smoothly through your machines. We also use inner sealants with a wide heating range, which means your bags seal fast and tight without burning the plastic or slowing down your production.
