Recyclable Pouch Candidates — PE and PP Families
We discuss PE-family and PP-family structures for custom recyclable pouch projects. The MDOPE / PE coffee pouch shown here is one project reference. Films, barrier layers, printing, adhesives and fitted components all need to be considered in the finished-pack review.
PE and PP should be checked against the relevant recycling stream separately. Collection and processing must accept the complete flexible pack in the market where it is sold; a material name alone does not identify a household bin.
Compostable Pouch Candidates — Review the Finished Item
We discuss cellulose-based laminates and suitable sealing layers, including PLA or PBS options, around your product and intended composting route. The bulk tea project shown here lists white kraft paper / NKME / PBS.
The full configuration needs evidence for the composting environment it is claimed for. Industrial and home composting are different conditions, and the local collection or facility must accept that packaging. A film certificate does not establish the status of every finished pouch using that film.
Kraft Appearance and Recycled Content
A paper-like appearance and recycled content answer different questions from the disposal route. A kraft outer layer may have a separate barrier or sealing layer. Recycled content describes the source of material, while recyclability describes what can happen to the used pack. If recycled content is part of your brief, mention the intended use and market so availability and suitable documentation can be discussed.

Complete-Pouch Checklist
Review the outer film or paper, barrier and sealing layers, inks and coatings, adhesives, windows and any zipper, valve or spout. Check the bag format, thickness and intended printed design as part of that specification.
Current-Pack Reference
Your current foil-based or other laminate can provide a useful performance reference during trials. The chosen alternative needs to meet your own protection and packing criteria; a material change alone does not establish a lower total environmental impact.

Build Material Selection Around Your Product
Tell us what the pouch must protect, how you fill it and how it will be stored. Oxygen and moisture transmission data need their test conditions and the actual material specification to be meaningful. The filled product then needs validation for its intended shelf life.
Coffee and Loose-Leaf Tea
Discuss aroma, moisture and oxygen protection, storage conditions and any coffee degassing valve. Closure choice and the full pouch structure are part of the material review.
Chocolate, Nuts and Other Snacks
Consider moisture sensitivity, fats and aromas, light exposure and handling. A clear window or chosen finish needs to be considered alongside the barrier requirements.
Powders and Supplements

Answers to material, product protection, documentation and ordering questions when planning a custom pouch.
Recyclable packaging can be collected and processed through an appropriate recycling system, with that route available where the pack is sold. Compostable packaging needs evidence for the complete item and a defined composting environment. Biodegradable describes breakdown under particular conditions; the word alone does not identify a suitable disposal route. Tell us your product and target market so we can discuss a relevant material route.
No. PE-family and PP-family structures can be candidates for recycling, but the finished pouch also includes printing, coatings, adhesives and any zipper, valve, window or spout. Those features need to be compatible with the intended recycling stream. Local collection and processing must accept the finished format. A resin code or the material name alone does not establish that it belongs in a household recycling bin.
We can discuss these features around your bag format and product. Each component needs to be included in the complete-pouch specification and in the review of the intended recycling or composting route. A valve or zipper being made from a particular polymer does not by itself establish acceptance of the whole bag. Tell us which features you need before the sample and artwork specification is agreed.
Industrial and home composting are different conditions. A commercial compostability statement does not establish home compostability. Check whether the relevant evidence covers the finished pouch, its components and the intended environment. The local facility also needs to accept that packaging. A compostability claim is not a promise that the bag will break down in landfill, the sea or as litter.
The complete layer structure determines that answer. A kraft outer layer may be combined with a plastic or other sealing and barrier layer, and the window or closure adds further components. The brown or paper-like appearance does not establish plastic-free, paper-recyclable or compostable status. Share the look you want and the disposal route you need so the full specification can be reviewed together.
Recycled content describes the source of some of the material; recyclability describes the route available for the used pack. They are separate attributes. If you need post-consumer recycled content, tell us the intended use and market so we can discuss availability and the specific documentation needed. Food-contact suitability must be assessed for the relevant material, recycling process and use. No single PCR percentage is promised across our pouch range.
The result depends on your product and the selected structure. Start with the protection your current pack provides, the intended shelf life, filling conditions and storage environment. Review the candidate material data with its test conditions, then validate the filled pouch for your own product. The shelf-life conclusion needs to match your product and the agreed pouch specification.
Follow the storage guidance and usable storage period confirmed for the chosen structure. Plan around temperature, humidity, sunlight and the time between delivery and filling. Empty-pouch storage life and the shelf life of a filled product are different. Discuss your stock and filling schedule during material selection so the storage guidance can match the agreed pouch.
These uses need a structure and seals suited to the actual process. A material being recyclable or compostable does not establish suitability for hot fill, freezing, retort or long-term liquid storage. Share the product, process temperatures, filling method and handling conditions so the specification and required validation can be discussed. The dry-product projects on this page do not establish performance for a liquid or heat-treated product.
That depends on the selected film, bag format and your equipment. Use a production-relevant sample to check filling, handling and seal formation on the intended line. Sealing temperature, pressure and dwell time need to suit that structure and machine. We do not promise that every alternative runs at the same settings or speed as your existing pouch.
